Breakfast at Epiphanies

Breakfast at Epiphanies.

DJ and producer Syz, hailing from Brighton, is an eclectic music bloke with many poignant words regarding the industry and its energy. The energy that refuses to sit still, no matter how big or small the scene. He’s been on music early doors, starting out with grime and dubstep instrumentals after his brother gave him a copy of fruity loops back in year 7. Spending 5 years in the Bristol circuit, he’s now on a percussive wave these days in London. Syz has been pulling out a fine selection of releases in the last couple years and lockdown’s been a key factor. We met up in a sunny Haggerston Park back in July 2021. Equipped with a bounty of refreshments, we planted ourselves by a pond to chat the scene over.

Accompanied by swimming rats and sun-squinted eyes, the conversation in this time was surrounded by a foreboding and doubtful near future with seductively dainty promises coming from the fella at number 10. On the day of our interview clubs were finally allowed back open after the deflating 21st June pushback. Syz was filled with a passionate sense of positivity regarding the sense of community that is embedded within the music industry. He led the chat with a strong voice towards the dancefloors’ reactive creativity. A kind of call and response runs through the veins of the live music circuit, with a revolving energy running from dj to dj, dj’s to punters and punters to spaces in the times we stuttered through in 2021. The distanced raves being a distant shoreline familiar in its appearance but with fuck all to anchor to.

Lacking in the unrepressed identity of varying dance floors we know and love, Syz also emphasises that we’re missing out on inspiration, community and those hedonistic epiphanies. For all that it gives, deep into many cultures, Syz knew for certain that there’s no possibility of its demise. There will always be a party in whatever form it takes. The show will go on. Long live the resistance of the underground.
